OUR AREA
The north of New Zealand is an almost subtropical part of the country with a relatively warm climate (if not a trifle damp at times) for most of the year.
The North is home to many orchid growers both commercial Cymbidium growers and hobbyists who grow almost all genera from the warmest of the warm to the very cold tolerant types, such is the diversity of the climate.
Some of the warmer genera do need minimal heating in the coolest months which are June,July & August here, and fans are needed in the height of summer to keep genera such as Masdevallias cool. But generally orchid growing is a breeze!

The Whangarei Orchid Society holds two meetings a month throughout the year one in the evening on the first Wednesday at 7.30pm at the 'Gold Church Hall' in Kamo Road which is the main route north to the Bay Of Islands. The other meeting is a day group meeting which caters for the members who for whatever reason cannot attend meetings at night. These latter meetings which are very relaxed and informal are held on the 2nd Thursday morning starting at 9.30 am at various members homes on a rotation basis.
We also hold two shows each year one in April and another, much larger one in September. So if you are in our 'neck of the woods' come and see us.
