Some Local New Zealand Native Orchids

Generally New Zealand native orchids are not very showy and are quite small but never the less are delightful in their natural surroundings below are some of the most often seen in the bush of the north.








Earina autumnalis or the'Easter Orchid
is very fragrant and can be smelt long
before it is seen in the bush.





Dendrobium cunninghamii Now called Winika cunninghamii or 'Lady's Slipper Orchid'
is NZ's only Dendrobium.It grows mostly high up
in the trees in almost full sun.

Acianthus sinclairii.
This tiny orchid grows amongst the leaf litter on the bush floor.
The flower stem reaches only about 4 inches above a single heart shaped leaf. The flowers are red/green and there are from 1-10 of them

Thelymitra pulchella or 'Sun Orchid'
Pulchella means 'pretty'.This lovely orchid exhibits a range of flower colours from white to pink to lavender blue usually with dark blue stripes.
Most of this genera need to be in full sun for the flowers to open properly.They grow mainly on roadside banks and under scrub.
